Heat Wave may pose annual threat to India: Climate change report
India faced a deadly heat wave in the year 2015. it led to the death of at least 2,500 people. Scientists are now expecting this unfortunate event to unfold annually. This could happen if the world gets warmer 2 degrees Celsius over pre-industrial levels.
The much-anticipated world’s biggest review report on climate change was released the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) on Monday.
The implications of the report will be discussed at the Katowice Climate Change Conference in Poland this December. The governments will review the Paris Agreement in order to battle climate change. India is currently, one of the largest carbon-emitting nations. So, it will be a key player in this global event.
Kolkata and Karachi are specifically mentioned in the report. These cities could face an increased threat of heat waves. Climate change is significantly contributing to the mortality caused due to heat waves.
A co-author of the report, Arthur Wyns from Climate Tracker said, “It is now the scientific consensus that global warming affects human health, causing loss of millions of lives”. The report states that for global warming to be contained at 1.5 degrees C, the net human-caused CO2 emissions would need to fall 45% from 2010 levels 2030. They will have to reach zero 2050.
